Marlins center fielder Cameron Maybin is not in the lineup today after his collision with teammate Gaby Sanchez in the first game of Saturday’s double-header.
“He has a slight headache,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “We’ll led him go through his paces, hit in the cage and he may be able to pinch hit.”
Gonzalez expects Maybin to be back in the lineup Monday for the start of the Marlins nine-game homestand.
Sanchez ran into Maybin, his helmet smacking Maybin in the face, when Maybin was standing on first and Sanchez barreling full speed not knowing if his soft line drive was caught by shortstop Troy Tulowitzki.
Maybin said his equilibrium was off after the hit, his vision was blurry and his eyes ere fluttering.
Pitching plans
* LH Nate Robertson will come back on three days rest to pitch Wednesday against the Padres. Robertson started the second game of Saturday’s double-header and lasted just four innings. He threw 84 pitches in the Rockies’ 8-1 victory. Ricky Nolasco, who threw 105 pitches in the Marlins’ 4-1 win in the opener, will start Friday against the Nationals on five days rest.
* Reliever Brian Sanches (hamstring) is expected to join the team Monday after pitching in back-to-back games Thursday and Friday for Jupiter without allowing a hit or a run. “There is no reason why he needs to show any more,” Fredi said.
* Fredi was pleased with the way struggling reliever Dan Meyer pitched out of a jam in the ninth inning of Game 2 Saturday. Meyer, who entered the game with a 19.29 ERA, allowed the Rockies to load the bases with no outs and got out of it by allowing one run. “Those last two hitters I thought his slider was really good, I thought his fastball was down and it had some life,” Fredi said.
Rockies, Marlins remember Keli McGregor
A stirring, emotional tribute to Keli McGregor, the Rockies president who died suddenly on Tuesday of natural causes, was held at Coors Field today. He was 48.
A stage, surrounded by flowers and family pictures, was set up at home plate. Mr. McGregor’s family along with about 3,000 mourners filled the seats behind home plate. Among them were Marlins general manager Michael Hill and coach Dave Collins, both of whom worked with Mr. McGregor during their time with the Rockies.
Fredi Gonzalez said he watched the tribute from his office with tears in his eyes. He was so moved he called his wife and children to tell them he loves them.
“You never know,” he said. “I used to run into Keli in the weight room and never had a conversation with him. You wish now you would have said something to him.”
Among the speakers: Mr. McGregor’s four children; Clint Hurdle, the former Rockies manager who is now the Rangers hitting coach; and Sonny Lubick, the former football coach at Colorado State, where Mr. McGregor played football.
Hundreds of purple and white balloons were released into the sky during a bagpipe rendition of “Amazing Grace.”
Mr. McGregor’s initials ‘KSM’ have been painted on the field and flags are at half-mast throughout the stadium. The Rockies are wearing a black, circular a patch on the right sleeve of their jerseys that bear Mr. McGregor’s initials, ‘KSM,’ in silver lettering.
